Pediatric Allergist Chicago
Nasal congestion / obstructive sleep apnea
Allergies, nasal congestion, and airway obstruction can affect the sleep of up to 10% of children. Symptoms that suggest allergies or nasal congestion may be affecting your child’s sleep include:
- Frequent snoring and mouth breathing
- Sleep walking or night terrors
- Bedwetting
- Daytime fatigue
- Hyperactive behavior
- Poor school performance
- Moodiness, anxiety, or depression
- Restlessness and sweating during sleep
Enlarged tonsils / adenoids
Sometimes pediatric nasal congestion and snoring can be associated with a condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, unlike adults, the symptoms in children may be very subtle. Children do not always stop breathing completely and snoring may be very mild. #OSA in children is usually due to enlarged tonsils / adenoids and swollen nasal passages. Treatment usually consists of surgical removal of the adenoids and tonsils and diagnosing and treating allergies if present.
